Needles, Parties and attention

Oh what a busy few days it has been this weekend! On Friday Calder got some needles (vaccinations) and boy, did he not like that! He was in all sorts of bad moods for the rest of the day and night.

Only his mom's cuddles could calm him down enough at night for him to finally get some rest. Mom gets a lot of practice, Calder loves being held by her.

Saturday was another busy day. His grandmother and his aunt Colleen came over Friday night to spend some time with Calder and his family. That gave his Mom and Dad a chance to do some shopping. And look what we found! A Toronto Maple Leafs Infant Car Seat Cover. Woohoo!

It goes so well with his new Leafs outfit that his Dad bought him earlier in the week. He wore that to the big birthday party on Saturday night. Calder was a patient boy, overflowing in Leafs attire, but waiting through 90 minutes of traffic. That patience will suit him well. Maybe he will get to see them win a Stanley Cup in his lifetime. Bob and Joanne gave Calder a really neat toy that grabs Calder's attention immediately. His eyes open up so wide, we all wonder what he is thinking. You will see him in action with the toy later this week here.

What a growing boy he is. Becoming more attentive each day. His whole body is getting stronger and stronger, and his feet are already too big for the sleepers that fit his body. He'll likely have large feet when he is older.

We even had visitors on Monday! Steve and Heidi passed by to see Calder for the first time. Heidi is a nurse and Steve just loves kids, so Calder got a lot of attention, and even a talking bear! Dad thinks Calder will have a lot of fun with that bear. Steve and Heidi should come over more often... Calder, mom, dad and Finn all enjoyed their company. Pictures of Calder and the bear are bound to turn up here soon. Thank you for the gift.

Almost two months old!

More birthday greetings. This one to Calder's uncle Walter and his cousin Olivia. He is seeing them both this weekend at a huge party that will celebrate multiple birthdays. He's already practicing his singing. Not quite there, but improving. What do you expect for a newborn? You people are so demanding.

It's not like he isn't trying to do new things, it's just that he can't do much right now. So go easy on the guy will ya?!?!?

One of the new developments with Calder over the last few days has been increasing acceptance of his special chair. It gives mom and dad a chance to place him for a minute or two while they heat up his formula or tidy up a bit.

Calder is fun to watch in this chair of his. He can stare for an eternity at the stuffed animals hanging from the arch, or sometimes, he falls asleep... as in this picture... with his arms still reaching for the stuffed animals.

In a week it will be Calder's first Halloween. We're debating whether or not it will be worth driving around for a few hours visiting family all across the GTA to show off a two month old who will likely be tired, hungry and in need of a change. While this isn't a costume, it can certainly double as one.

Happy Birthday Peter!

Calder wishes his cousin Peter a very happy 7th Birthday!!!

Calder's dad told him all about his cousin Peter, and Calder can't wait for Peter to show him how to play hockey and build things. Calder's dad, avô and avó tell him all about Peter and the great things he does and Calder wants to grow up just like him. He can't wait for the birthday party!

Calder has been busy growing, eating & crying. But he always seems to calm down when there is a hockey game on TV. Here he is watching the Leafs.

Busy week!

Hello there!

It's been a very busy week for Calder and his family. Calder had a lot of travelling to do lately. As much as his daddy can sleep through anything at night, Calder can sleep through any traffic jam in his carseat.

On Friday he made a quick visit to the doctor to check on his nasty diaper rash and then made a trip with his mommy and daddy to see his avó (grandmother). She was at St. Joseph's having surgery the morning before. His avó told ALL the nurses on her floor that Calder was coming to see her. His avó made sure she was being very strong so that she could enjoy Calder's visit. When Calder arrived all the nurses began to line-up to see Calder. Even other patients gave him a big smile and wave. His avó was very happy to see him and Calder missed her. If only he really understood how much his visit meant to her. We hope she gets stronger each day!

His avó was released from hospital on Sunday and Calder (and mom and dad) made a visit to her house on that day. By now his diaper rash was getting worse and more painful. But Calder was seeing that his avó was being strong, so he was too. He barely cried.

Then the family went to see Calder's great-grandmother. He's her third great-grandchild! The family had a great Thanksgiving meal (it was Canadian Thanksgiving Day) that his grandmother and aunt had made. Maybe next year he can try some of his grandmother's squash.

Calder has been irritated very much by an awful diaper rash. He is crying much of the time he is awake because of it and his mommy has been taking very good care of him, doing the best that she can to ease the pain and trying to get rid of the rash. It was suggested to us that Calder be given some "air time" without diapers to see if that helps the rash heal faster. So far, not really. Our dog Finn gets quite concerned about Calder because he hears Calder crying all the time and knows he is in pain. Finn can't do much for him, but he stays near Calder to comfort him in his own dog way. He's tried (and succeeded sometimes) kissing Calder (licking Calder's hands and face) but mom and dad are too quick to stop that until Calder is older.

Calder and his parents would like to thank all the wonderful people (friends, family, friends of friends, co-workers, online buddies, etc) who have offered mom and dad with advice and a sounding board as we went through Calder's first (almost!) 6 weeks of life. Although it has been difficult, we feel very lucky to have a healthy boy (except the diaper rash) and such wonderful and caring people around us.

Another weekend goes by

Another weekend has passed on the calendar yet all the days are blurring into one. Dad is working from home and helping out when he can. Calder sometimes forgets that he is "working". Finn keeps trying to kiss Calder when dad is holding him. Maybe he wants to hold him too.

Most of the time Finn is just keeping a watchful eye on him, just in case mom or dad need some help. He's always the first to answer Calder's cries. I can only imagine the mischief they will get into together 4 years from now.

Calder is certainly getting a lot of practice yawning and fighting sleep. He only seems to want to sleep when mom and dad can't.

Good night.
