Christmas Holidays and New Years Eve

Calder has had an eventful week or so. Jammed with lots of visitors and lots of firsts.He had his first Christmas and came away completely spoiled! I envy kids today and all the things they get. Although he mostly received clothes, I can just imagine all the toys he will get on future Christmas mornings. Christmas Eve was spent at my parents place and Calder certainly had a great time with his cousins Peter and Olivia. They kept him up and laughing for more than 5 hours! He didn't want to sleep, he just wanted to talk and laugh. Peter had the duties of handing out the first gifts this year, but Calder was so impressed that he has already secretly started to practice for next year. We're not sure if he can handle the duty full-time, but I think he had the potential for pulling out a gift or two next year. He'll be trying it!

Christmas morning was spent opening gifts at home and Calder barely lasted through the stockings, so he napped while his mom and I went through our own gifts. After his nap (he was really tired from all the playtime the night before), we helped him open up all his wonderful gifts. We packed in the car with his grandma and aunt Colleen and travelled to Campbellford for Christmas dinner in the country with my wife's family. Her aunt Karen and Uncle Pat own a truly magnificent home on a farm, rural but close to town, rustic but modern, all it needed was a bit of snow and it would be paradise! We've been there before and enjoy going back. While Calder was fawned over by my wife's relatives, we managed to squeeze in another superb meal that Pat and Karen cooked up. Pat is likeliest the best chef (who isn't a chef) that I have ever had the privilege to know. He's quite a nice guy too! I'm not sure how Pat and Karen divide the dishes, but it was amazing as usual. Quite an accomplishment when they were having trouble tasting dishes because of a cold they had. One day, I will figure out the recipe for his stuffing. Each year I get closer and closer to it. The cooking skills must run in the family as their daughter Samantha made some great desserts (I LOVE trifle). Thanks for the puppy Samantha, Calder loves it.

During the last week, Calder has also begun to get really interested in food, and his feet. Sometimes he confuses the two. His teeth are likely coming in, so there is drool everywhere and he is really starting to fight it when we put him to sleep. Being from a Euro background, I suggested putting some wine or brandy on his soother, but my wife and others just gave me dirty looks. Even people who I know have tried it themselves! Cheeky Monkeys that you are!

Speaking of cheeky monkeys, those words will always remind me of Saturday Night Live now, "were you looking at my bum, you cheeky monkey!".Calder is so cute, and now with his head growing a nice steady stream of hair (enjoy it my son, enjoy it!!!) bathtime is a chance for us to mold his hair into different styles and have a laugh with him.

I hope that this next year is full of joy, health and happiness for you Calder, and for all of you reading this. I've likely kissed my boy goodnight for the last time this year, and seen his smile for the last time this year. Until next year, everyone. Good thing it's only a couple hours away.

Goodnight Calder, Daddy loves you!

'Twas the night before Christmas

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even our Finn;
The stockings were hung on the chair with care
In hopes that a mantle would soon be there;

Our Calder all nestled and snug in his crib,
While visions of toys danced in his head;
And mamma in her p.j's, and I in my shorts,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter's nap,

When out on the road there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the blinds and threw up my eyes.

How I wished for the moon and new-fallen snow
To give the lustre of mid-day to the mud below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name:

"Now, _Dasher!_ now, _Dancer!_ now, _Prancer_ and _Vixen!_
On, _Comet!_ on, _Cupid!_ on, _Donder_ and _Blitzen!_
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky;
So up to the house-top the gang they flew,
With the sleigh full of gifts, and St. Nicholas too.
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As Finn cocked his head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
A bundle of gifts he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack. His eyes--how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly.

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, Finn barked to himself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon let us know we had nothing to dread;

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,

_"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night."_

Merry Christmas to everyone. Especially to the kids out there, and the young at heart. And especially to those young boys and girls who will share future Christmas memories with Calder. Merry Christmas Peter, Olivia, Lauren, Parker, Norah, Brandon, Ethan, Scott, Meredith, Jack and all you others. The spirit of Christmas lives within all of you. We see it in your smiles and laughter.

Santa's Coming!!!

Calder is a bit young to understand Christmas but we went ahead with the Santa picture and lots of presents. Santa said he would be just as good to him as we would be. Lucky boy! Such a good boy too, not a tear or frown when with Santa. This is the best Santa I have seen, he even made me do a double-take as my inner child softly wondered, "Santa?".

Calder is getting right into the spirit of things, he is really laughing and smiling a lot lately. I think he can sense the excitement in the air as the people who love him gear up for the holidays.

Calder really loves to read. Daddy and mommy love to watch him investigate books.

One of the rituals "in the making" is the nightly reading of stories to Calder. Daddy loves this time with Calder. Especially when Calder is so interested in it. Daddy had a rough time feeding him prior to the book reading as you might notice from the shirt with formula stains. Calder calmed right down when the reading began.

Calder's mom loves to read to him too. She has much more time to do that and I am a wee bit jealous. OK, mucho jealouso. We stayed home today and daddy got to spend some precious time with Calder. We'll be seeing Denny, Alicia and Norah next week. We decided it would be too crazy to meet up on the busy shopping day of the year, so we postponed and spent time with our families. See you guys soon! And Merry Christmas! (you admitted you read the blog so I had to say hi!)

Calder is growing so quickly. It's amazing to witness. Every growing boy needs to be active! Check out his exercise regime!!! He started to roll over yesterday. Growing boy!

Here's my big man. Sorry for the quick blog, we have family over and my help is needed. I'll write again over the next couple of days.

Goodnight Calder, Daddy loves you!

Graduation

Look into my eyes!!!
I graduated today from the course I was taking over the last few weeks and I was happy to have Calder and my wife there to meet all the wonderful people that were my fellow travellers for those 100 hours. While Calder might be too young to fully understand what was going on, I was happy to see that he had a chance to meet the people who learned alongside his dad, grew as people in the time together, and who will make the world a better place for us all.

Calder thanks you for what you all have done and will be doing.

I'd like to pass along extra special thanks to the great Doctor Georgina and her great team of Mark, Don and Tariq.

And a super thank you to Dean, Kathleen, Larry, Kevin and Soph! You kept me sane (well, as close as could be expected for me) and provided moments I won't forget. If I ever do, I'll come see you for a session to bring those memories back. ;-)

I would also like to thank you all, each of you. I feel privileged, blessed, honoured and humbled all at once because of what we shared, accomplished and trusted amongst ourselves. Some things happen for a reason, and we came together for a reason. We did a lot, and know we have the power and skills to do so much more.

While I have been learning, so has Calder. Since he can't read, he's been busy intaking documentaries. As you can tell, he really doesn't agree with the views expressed by the program. He even has his fun hat on, and yet that doesn't sway him. Tough critic!

Here is Calder trying to practice his Christmas greeting so that he is prepared and rehearsed when people come over to the house this coming week.

With all the time I had at work and the course, and the sudden spring like temperatures around here, I am afraid I am running out of time to see Calder in cute winter gear like this. He's growing out of his wardrobe so quickly... not bad for a 3 and 1/2 month old!

This is why I will be helping people. Who will you change the world for?

Goodnight Calder, Daddy loves you!

My Happy Place

I've been away from my wife and Calder for a little bit. Away from them in terms of time at work

and coming home late, as well as taking courses through the weekend. The latter took up precious family time and even soaked up vacation days from work as I took Friday off. I keep getting the realization, re-affirmation if you will, that Calder and my wife are absolutely the most important things to me. That doesn't even describe it all. I still can't explain it, and I could try for the rest of my life perhaps without success. This weekend, with the help of the course and the people I am taking it with, I absolutely confirmed what my happy place in life is. It's all about these two. Everything I go through at work is for them. Every time I am rushing out to catch the train or putting up with people who I feel I shouldn't have to put up with, it's all for them. I'm OK with that. It's not a sacrifce, it's a privilege. They let me into their lives. Calder smiles glorious smiles for me and washes away any of the anger, frustration or sadness that I may have had. My wife steps in and brings me up higher. This is my happy place.

While I have been learning and working, Calder's been growing and learning too. He's been active in his chair and with his activity mat.

Here he is being hypnotized by one of his cows. This one that hangs from his chair has been one of his better plush animal toys. He's got a whole lot of stuffed animals that were purchased for him, but he enjoys the one that came with his chair.

Calder seems so smart for his age. Then again, almost every parent thinks their kid is a genius.

Maybe this fascination with the cow is a precursor for him being a vet? Here he is inspecting the cow's anatomy. Perhaps Finn should behave better and keep his distance from Calder for a bit. Calder might jump from cows to dogs soon!

I can hear my wife going downstairs after putting Calder to bed. He's giggling and talking babytalk right now. I am so anxious to hear his voice speak words that I can understand. In the meantime, his babytalk and giggles will do just fine.

Whether he realizes it or not, this little guy is making me learn a lot. What have you got for me next professor?

Goodnight Calder, Daddy loves you!

Sorry folks

Blogspot seems to be having some problems and I am unable to post any new pictures. I'll keep checking and trying.
