Busy Weekend

Hi everyone. It's been a busy weekend. Calder has been handling it alright very well. Smiling or sleeping through most of it.

He's a pretty happy boy these days. Chubby too!!! He's outgrowing so many of his clothes. He even outgrew the car. Mommy and Daddy picked up a new car on Saturday so that Calder can be safer when travelling with his parents.

Calder seems to really like the new car, he was in it so much this weekend. After picking up the car, he went with us to choose a sofa. I am glad I had my wife with me or I would have choosen a really cool sofa... a mint green one that I thought was grey. FUN FUN!!!

We then came home and I finished putting together a home gym that I got so we could workout and get back into shape. Since it is in the house, there are no excuses. We did a quick workout with Calder watching, and after his bath, he wanted to workout too!

He's quite the strong little guy. Always trying to show how much he can do and how strong he is. And he's likely not as sore today as his parents.

Here he is trying to hurry up to get out of the house on Saturday. I bought Marlies tickets for my nephew as a birthday gift and Calder was going to the craft show with his mom and Aunt Colleen. I can't wait to take him to a hockey game in a couple of years. Maybe his cousin will want to come with us?

Calder saw his cousin for a bit after the game then again the next at the birthday party for their avô. Here are the three of them blowing out the candles on the cake. Calder needs some practice, he hasn't seen it done before!

I took the day off work today to spend some time with my family. As Christmas approaches, spare time is gone, especially with the work schedule I have in the next few weeks, so it was important to spend some time now. Calder and his bear reminded me that I forgot to call Steve & Heidi back this weekend. I am sorry! I'll call you soon.

Goodnight Calder. Daddy loves you!

Oh, hello!

Hello world! Calder is certainly starting to take in his world. He changes so much each day. When I get home from work, I swear he already has a different look than when I left in the morning.

He spends a lot of time with his mommy during the day. My wife is a teacher and has taught junior kindergarten recently. Her skills shine through. Calder is blossoming. Without her, he wouldn't get a song sung to him on-key.

Calder has been stuffing his mouth with his hands, blankets, bibs, pretty much anything and everything he can get his hands on.

I am often too excited to see him when I get home from work that I don't have everything new he's done sink in. All I want to do is hold him and make him laugh. His smile is so wonderful. Catching it on camera is difficult though.

Calder has been getting stronger each day. Here he is practicing his grip. He's practicing his grip-twist actually. It's where he grabs a part of your body, squeezes his grip and hard as he can, then twists rapidly before repeating it all. I wonder if that's how wrestlers start building strength as babies.

Calder loves this chair. He absolutely loves it. Whether the arch of animals is on it or not, there is something about this chair that he loves. It does look comfortable and relaxing. Maybe I should get a chair like this.

His hair is growing so fast. By Christmas he'll have a full head of hair. OK, maybe not "full", but full by my standards. ;-)

Goodnight Calder. Daddy loves you!

Precious

For most of my life, I didn't really understand what precious meant. I associated it with money. Ads associated it with gems and jewels. Having a career and a family made me associate it with time. All of that are secondary though. When I get home from work and look into those eyes, I understand what precious is.

Those of you out there who are parents will understand this. Once you become a parent, other parents seem to crawl out of the woodwork and begin talking to you. Parents and expectant parents... even couples trying to get pregnant. People gush over Calder and in the same breath open up to me with their personal battles with pregnancies and life.
Couples who have gone through literally handfuls of miscarriages, stillborn babies and couples struggling to even get pregnant open up to you. And together you share stories, hopes, fears and dreams. When my wife was pregnant, fellow commuters would sit beside me as I read fatherhood books and offer advice. While everyone's burping, sleeping and feeding advice was different, there was one common theme. Enjoy these times. Enjoy your child.

Calder is a healthy, growing boy. We are truly blessed for that. Not every parent is so lucky and not every couple can have a child. We got lucky. Calder was our first attempt and he is healthy and strong and growing. We do know people who aren't so lucky and who battled with miscarriages and infertility, only to recently become parents for the first time. Then there are others who have children who aren't as healthy as Calder. Like our friends around the block and their child Parkerhttp://scidada.blogspot.com. Elizabeth is a co-worker of both of Parker's parents and I knew his mom via her brother from years ago. Parker was born the day after we told his parents that we were also going to have a baby. The moms got excited about being on mat leave together, and the dads silently wondered who would have the better athlete. Parker is going to be healthy, he just isn't quite there yet. He might need some help and encouragement. He's every bit as precious as Calder is, as every baby is. They all need our love and we are all blessed by them. Every single second with them. When Parker gets healthy and can have some playfriends, Calder will be right over in the blink of an eye. He's primed and pumped for some playtime with Parker. Lookout neighbourhood!

Why am I like this today? Well, I've been very stressed out. It must be all the changes in my life in the last year, with the added pressures of fatherhood (time, money... see above comment about what is precious) all finally catching up to me. I lost track of what is precious. My wife saw me practically snap last night and took some action. She walked the dog and made dinner so that when I got home late from work today, I could spend time with Calder and get back to what was important. If she didn't do that I don't know what tonight would have been like, but I certainly wouldn't have been sane enough to add to this blog. Even though it meant a hectic pace for her and a long day, she pulled through it for me. Thank you sweetie. And thanks for all that you do with Calder during the day to make him the beautiful smiling boy that he is. Mothers don't get enough credit or recognition sometimes.

Speaking of mothers, my mom got some very good test results back yesterday from a recent surgery. We are all happy about the results. Here's Calder with his avô and avó. You'll be seeing more of Calder and his family in the near future.

This is yet another reason why babies are precious. We don't always get the chance to see them explore the world. "Work" gets in the way, and these are moments that we can never relive.
"They grow up so fast"
is what people said to me on the train or in other venues of baby conversation. I never quite understood and forgot what little I did, until tonight. I get it again.

Good night Calder. Daddy loves you!

More Sunday

I couldn't resist posting again today. I mean, look at this cutie!

He's already got more hair than daddy!

Calder has been having so much fun today playing with mommy and daddy.

He's even had some playtime in the bath!

Halloween week

Calder's first Halloween was an odd one. Only two groups of kids visited his house, three if you count Lauren and her dad. In a few years, I bet Calder, Lauren and Parker will be hitting every house on the block for candies.

Hopefully by then there won't be any violence in the neighbourhood like the shooting that happened close by. Dad was very angry that this is happening here and worried about the future here. But Calder got his mind off of it in a hurry with his showings of strength.

Calder is getting so much better at sitting upright.

This helps make it easier to watch hockey with Daddy. Daddy learned that Calder likes the theme song from Hockey Night in Canada! He smiles a big grin when he hears daddy hum it. We don't have a picture of it yet, but we will.

Calder is also liking his baths a whole lot more. Mommy is giving him baths a lot to keep him nice and clean.
